Best time to visit Japan: season by season
Japan can be visited all year round. What each season offers, when it's most crowded and when prices are best.
Japan can be visited all year round, but there are times that are especially recommended depending on what you're after. Here's what each one offers.
Spring (March to May)
It's one of the best times, thanks to the mild weather and above all the cherry blossoms, the sakura. The country fills with spectacular parks and streets. The downside is that it's also high season, with more people and higher prices.

Autumn (October and November)
Another of the best times. Temperatures are pleasant and the landscapes have the colors of autumn, with fewer crowds than in spring.
Summer (June to August)
It's hot and humid, especially in cities like Tokyo or Kyoto. Even so, it's a good time if you want to experience the festivals, the matsuri, and a more local experience.
Winter (December to February)
There's less tourism and prices are lower. It's ideal if you want to see Japan at a relaxed pace or visit snowy areas like the Japanese Alps.
Whatever the season, get to the most touristy places early. Temples like Fushimi Inari or areas like Arashiyama get very crowded, and going early makes all the difference.
Our recommendation
For a first trip, spring or autumn. If budget or crowds worry you, winter. And if summer is your only option, it's perfectly workable, with the matsuri as your reward.
