Gili Trawangan: the car-free island that slows you down

No cars, no rush, and turtles popping up while you snorkel. That's Gili Trawangan, the most tropical stretch of the whole trip.

After so many days getting around Bali by car, arriving on an island without a single car changes the trip's pace completely, almost overnight.

How the island gets around

There are no cars: you get around by bike, on foot, or in small local carts pulled by hand or by horse. Renting a bike and riding around most of the island, stopping at a beach, grabbing a drink or finding a swing in the middle of the sea, is basically the plan for the day, with no bigger ambition than that.

Snorkeling with turtles

Gili Trawangan is known for its snorkeling spots with sea turtles — you can book an excursion or look for the snorkel points directly from the beach. If a turtle shows up, keep your distance and let it swim at its own pace, without chasing it.

The north of the island. This is the calmest part, with clear-water areas where you can snorkel directly from the shore, no boat or organizing needed.

Sunset on the west side

Head to the west coast at sunset, without fail. Small bars and warungs on the sand while the sun disappears — and yes, that's where the classic swing-in-the-sea photo is. It's worth sticking around a while beyond the photo, just watching.

The first day of the trip where you truly feel you don't have to go anywhere.

Nightlife on Gili

After sunset the island changes face completely. The parties rotate depending on the day of the week — no booking tables or overplanning, just go out and see where the atmosphere is that particular night.
