My first day in Manila

My first day in Manila

After an endless flight, Manila wasn't the gentle welcome I expected. It was better: chaotic, loud and honest from the very first minute.

After almost twenty hours of flying with a layover, we landed in Manila with that mix of exhaustion and excitement you only get on the first day of a long trip, when your body is running behind but your head has already arrived. I wasn't expecting a gentle welcome, and I didn't get one: humid heat the moment we stepped out of the terminal, traffic unlike anything I'd ever seen in my life, and that constant background noise it would take days to fully stop noticing.

Makati, the modern district where we stayed the first two nights.

We stayed in Makati, the city's modern district, with the idea of not forcing anything on day one, knowing we were carrying jet lag on our backs. And it was the right call. We dropped our bags, went out to walk with no fixed destination, and let the city hit us at its own pace instead of trying to see all of it in a few hours.

The Philippines wasn't going to be a trip you could explain with pretty adjectives. It was going to be a trip you had to feel day by day, no shortcuts.

What I remember most from that first walk is the contrast: huge, modern shopping malls a block away from street food stalls, extremely kind people despite the general chaos, and that feeling of being somewhere genuinely different from any other trip I'd taken before.

We had something simple for dinner near the hotel, with zero ambition that first night — our bodies weren't ready for much more. But that first walk alone already made clear the tone the rest of the trip was going to have.
