What to see in Ksamil and Sarande: Albania's Caribbean
Ksamil and Sarande pack some of the clearest water in Europe into a tiny stretch of coast. Here's what you can't miss if you go.
Ksamil and Sarande have a reputation as "Europe's Caribbean," and the first time I heard that I figured it was pure tourist-brochure marketing. Then I went, and I have to admit the comparison undersells it. Along a stretch of coast you can drive in half an hour, the water shifts shade of blue every few meters, and in some spots you genuinely have to look twice to convince yourself you're still in Europe. Here's what I'd never forgive myself for skipping.

Aquarium Beach
It's the beach that's in every photo of Ksamil, and for once the photos don't lie. The water is so clear you can see the bottom perfectly from the jetty, in those turquoise tones that look photoshopped and aren't. I went once at midday, packed to the brim, and came back the next day at sunset — far fewer people, much better light, and restaurants right next door where you can have dinner practically with your feet in the sand. If you can only go once, make it the afternoon.
The islands of Ksamil
A tiny archipelago, four islets you can see from the shore and reach in five minutes by boat. You don't need to book any organized tour or pay extra for it: loose boats leave constantly from the harbor for €5-15 round trip, and the boatman gives you as much time as you want on each island. We went with no fixed plan and ended up switching islands three times just because we felt like swimming somewhere else.
Butrint National Park
20 minutes by car from Sarande. Roman and Greek ruins poking through the vegetation, next to a lagoon that reflects everything. I'll admit we almost left it out of the route — after so much beach, the idea of "seeing ruins" sounded like a chore — and it ended up being one of the stops we remember most, precisely because it contrasts with the rest of the trip.
If you only have one day in the area, combine Aquarium Beach in the afternoon with the islands of Ksamil in the morning. It's the order that works best: calm water first, sunset after.
Our real recommendation
Sarande has more of a city feel, better seafood restaurants and views of Corfu from the promenade. Ksamil clearly wins on water color, but it's smaller and more touristy. I wouldn't pick one over the other — with two nights in each area, which is how the itinerary is set up, you get the best of both without feeling like you missed anything.
