Dubrovnik or Hvar: planning the perfect Croatia route
Croatia deserves more than a week, but with 7 days well split between Dubrovnik and Hvar you can experience both the country's historic side and its party side. Here's how we split the days and why the order matters.
Croatia is a destination of contrasts, and that's exactly what makes planning the route trickier than it looks at first glance, before you sit down and think it through calmly. With only 7 days, the real question isn't so much "what to see" as "how much time to give each side of the country" — because Dubrovnik and Hvar are, almost literally, two different trips packed into one suitcase.
Dubrovnik first, always
Dubrovnik is history, walls and an old town that looks like a film set — it's no coincidence it's one of the most recognizable settings in recent TV, and you can feel it as soon as you walk through the Pile Gate. Starting here, with three full days, lets you absorb that slower, more cultural pace before the trip shifts gear completely.

Hvar: why it needs at least two days
Hvar has a reputation as a party island, and it's earned part of it, but reducing it to just that would be a rookie mistake. Between Dubovica beach, the climb up to the fortress and the harbor atmosphere at sunset, two days is the real minimum for the island to feel lived-in rather than just glanced at.
The Pakleni Islands: the counterpoint that closes the trip
The archipelago facing Hvar is, to me, the piece that rounds off the whole itinerary. After days of history and partying, Pakleni offers exactly the opposite: total calm, clear water and coves you can only reach by boat, with nothing to do except be there.
Starting with Dubrovnik works like an energy ramp-up, not the other way around. We tried it this way and wouldn't change it.
Our real recommendation
If you only have 5 or 6 days, cut a day from Dubrovnik before touching Hvar or Pakleni — those two areas lose more if you shorten them. If you have more than 7, adding Split is the logical move. But for a first time, this split is, by far, the one that gives the most per day invested, and I say that having lived it start to finish.
