What nobody tells you before traveling to Croatia
After 7 days between Dubrovnik and Hvar, here's what I wish I'd known before packing: from the stairs to why booking the ferry in advance isn't optional.
There are things no blog tells you until you live them, no matter how many guides you read before leaving home. After 7 days between Dubrovnik and Hvar, here's what I wish I'd known before packing.

Dubrovnik has way more stairs than you'd imagine. Between the old town and the climb up to the walls, pretty but uncomfortable shoes cost you dearly — we learned that on day two, when our feet already hurt in a way we hadn't anticipated.
The ferry to Hvar isn't something you buy on the fly in peak season. Seats on the Dubrovnik–Hvar route sell out faster than you'd think in summer, and we came close to missing out on the time slot we wanted.
The beaches aren't sandy, and that changes your plan. In both Dubrovnik and Hvar, almost every beach is rock or pebble. Water shoes make the difference between enjoying the swim and hobbling over stones every time you get in.
Right on Stradun you pay for the view, not the food. Walking a couple of streets away from Dubrovnik's tourist center noticeably improves the value for money — something we found out late and wish we'd known on day one.
Croatia uses the euro, but it's still worth carrying some cash. On islands and small excursions, especially in Pakleni, not everywhere takes cards.
The shift in pace between Dubrovnik and Hvar is more abrupt than I expected. Going from a historic, calm atmosphere to a party one within hours is part of the trip's charm — but it's better to go in mentally prepared, because our first day in Hvar felt strange until we found the rhythm.
None of this will ruin your trip if you don't know it beforehand. But knowing it ahead of time saves you some surprises, and above all real time — which on a trip of just 7 days is what you have least of.
